Question

Can I use a Remote Desktop connection to run QCX V8 applications from e.g. an office PC?

Details

On V7 we often used Terminal Services on the QCX server to run Remote Desktop connection from other PCs.

Answer

No, with QCX V8 you need to use a click-once client installation to install a QCX client on the remote PC.

Remote Desktop connections to the QCX server should - for performance reasons - be avoided, except for occational maintenance sessions.

Remote Desktop/Terminal Services can be used if an additional dedicated server is installed for this purpose. This server will then only serve remote connections and not having any operational software installed.

Notes

RSk: Using click-once clients from an office network can in some cases be tricky due to firewall settings. Some guidance follows here:

I just talked to Claus and he says it is possible to configure the firewall for Workplaces on the office net.

Quick info on how it works:

Firewall open port 80(Web) and 808(WCF). Translate internal IP-addresses 10.24.4.X to an outside IP address on the office net e.g. 192.168.1.Y On the customer office PC the hosts file needs to be updated to translate the server name and IP e.g. QCX666SVR01 192.168.1.Y

Advantages of the above:

The customer cannot access the QCX server from all PCs on the office net - only the ones that have the hosts file translation. Lagan actually liked this.

On the Core 8.9 release which the new QCX 8.4 will use, the PC on the office net has to be added to the configuration of QCX under Privileged, otherwise it will be view-only even if you login as FlsAdmin super-admin.
